Saddle blankets | | Work pads:
Not that I am a professional's choice advocate or anything, but my two work pads are professional's choice. The only reason I have two is the first one I ordered was 32" x 32" and it is very small under my saddle, barely even peeking out from underneath it. So finally I caved and last year I bought a 34" x 36". This pad shows about 2" around the edges now which I like much better. The new one is nice enough that I can even go in a class with it if I am feeling a bit lazy.

There are currently two kinds of popular pads, Cowhorse Equipment and Yucca Flats
Aside from these two big hitters you can get away with anything you want as long as it has a nice clean look under your saddle. I would also say that you need to be careful of size. Don't get one too small or you will be disappointed. I do have an array of Mayatex pads, but overall they are a thin wool that curls up on the ends which I don't like. I also find their sizing is not perfect, so be careful with these.
I have two Cowhorse pads, dark mustard/black trim and bright blue/white trim. They are basic pads. I did not get black because there are many in my barn and I wanted a color. I can always borrow a black one, or folks can borrow my colored ones. These pads are not cheap at all, they start at $355.
I do not own a Yucca Flats pad yet, though now that they are sold by distribution, the horse show tack vendors have them and I will get one one day. they are so colorful I just cannot decide. They are priced at $230.
I also have an assortment of all-around show pads and I use them shamelessly. I have my Golden West "Easter Pad" (a personal favorite)

it is Pink, lavender and lime green with a bit of tan on an off white background.
Other older show pads include Golden West and Moreland (this links to a video showing a nice crisp look with a busy Moreland pad) pads of varying colors. All of them have a pattern and are fun to use when I want to look busy or loud in the pen. |
