How to be a scribe at a reining show
Being a scribe at a reining show is one of the most rewarding show duties a person can undertake. It is great for the competitor, family member or a fellow horse enthusiast who wants to learn more about reining competition.

Generally a scribe cannot be competing at a show once they have scribed for that show. The reason being that judges are very informative when calling out scores to their scribes and it would be an unfair advantage for the scribe to then go and compete knowing the judges likes and dislikes.

The scribing process requires you know simple math, and not be showing!

Each score sheet will have the riders numbers printed on it in the order of their draw (usually) or you can mark the number as the rider walks in.

As each part of the pattern (called a maneuver) is demonstrated, the judge will call out any penalty numbers as the penalties occur, then, at the end of the maneuver a score will be called out. This can be a plus or a minus score and the judge will clearly state it as such, like "Minus one half" or "Plus one".

Make sure you are writing the penalty and maneuver scores in the correct square, Penalty on top, maneuver score on the bottom, then at the end there is a "penalty" box for the sum total of all penalties. To the right of the penalties is where the final summation of all maneuver scores less the penalties will be entered.

Below each penalty and maneuver score, a running tally is kept. This is an informal summation to allow for minimal math to be done at the end of the pattern.

Now, where the education comes in, is that a friendly judge will usually verbalize what they are seeing as it happens, thus explaining the scores they are giving out. It is really a very rewarding experience!
