Reining Introduction- a "western" horseback riding discipline
Reining is an event akin to ice skating. Each horse/rider pair has a pattern to complete. There are four maneuvers that they demonstrate in these patterns: Circles, Turn arounds, Lead changes and Sliding stops. Some maneuvers are demonstrated multiple times, and in both directions. The average pattern will have 8 total maneuvers that get scored. Each maneuver is scored a value depending on how well the maneuver is done. A correct maneuver is a 0, a maneuver done well, or poor will give a plus or minus score ranging from 1/2 to 1 1/2 depending on the degree with which it was done poorly or well. The mean score that every horse walks into the pen with is 70. So with all maneuvers correct, but no "well-done" or "poorly-done" maneuvers the result would be 70.

A rider just starting out in reining has a goal of getting a 70... After that, 82 is the limit, but for reference, a top score at a really big show would be 75 or so. At a smaller reining event, a top score could be 73. For non-pro classes, a horse that scores 72 to 72.5 consistently will usually be in the top placings.

NRHA is the main governing entity that reining people follow. Their handbook(PDF) has a detailed section on the various patterns that includes diagrams.
